Start with Your Windows

Windows are one of the first parts of your home to show signs of coastal exposure. Salt particles from the ocean get carried in the breeze and settle on the glass. Over time, this builds up and leaves a cloudy, etched look — especially if the windows aren’t cleaned regularly.

We recommend exterior window cleaning every three months if you're near the coast. A professional clean using a pure water system removes all salt, dirt and mineral residue without leaving streaks. Pure water dries spot-free and is much safer than climbing ladders with a bucket and squeegee.

Also make sure frames and sills are included in the clean. Salt and moisture can corrode aluminium and stain timber if left too long.

Wash Down the House at Least Twice a Year

Your cladding, paintwork and soffits all collect grime over time. Add in the sea breeze and you've got a steady build-up of salt, dirt, mould and mildew — especially on south-facing sides that get less sun.

Soft washing is a safe and effective way to clean weatherboards, brick, plaster and other exterior surfaces. It uses a low-pressure rinse combined with gentle cleaning solutions that kill mould spores and lift organic stains.

This is especially important if you're planning to repaint. Paint doesn't stick properly to dirty surfaces, and you could end up sealing in moisture or algae beneath the new layer.

Keep Gutters Clear of Coastal Debris

Coastal winds often carry fine sand, salt, leaves and small debris onto rooftops and into gutters. Blocked gutters don’t just overflow — they can cause long-term water damage to fascias, soffits and even your foundation.

Check and clean your gutters at least twice a year, especially before winter. If you're surrounded by trees or close to the beach, consider doing it quarterly. A proper clean-out includes flushing the downpipes and checking that rainwater flows freely away from the home.

Regular Maintenance is Better Than One Big Clean

One of the most common mistakes homeowners make is leaving the exterior until it looks really dirty before booking a clean. But by then, the damage may already be done — especially on glass or paint.

A simple maintenance plan every 3 to 6 months makes your cleans easier, cheaper, and more effective. Plus, your home will look consistently sharp year-round.

If you’re not sure how often your home needs a clean, we can take a look and recommend a custom plan that suits your location and building materials.
